Requirements

  • One accessory unit per lot

  • Occupants do not have to be the family of the occupant of the primary structure

  • Can be rented for a fee

  • ADU may be attached or a detached (standalone) structure

  • If ADU is detached, the height of the structure cannot exceed the height of the principal structure

  • Setback requirements still apply for detached structures 

  • An RV cannot be used as an ADU

Miami Dade ADU Program (link)

  • Miami-Dade allows Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) and guesthouses in single-family properties

  • Can be:

    • Detached (separate structure)

    • Attached to the main home

    • Converted from existing space (garage, part of house, etc.)

  • Designed with regulations to maintain:

    • Neighborhood compatibility

    • Proper design standards

    • Parking requirements

ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit):

  • Independent living space with kitchen, bathroom, and sleeping area

  • Can be rented legally for additional income

Guesthouse:

  • Similar structure but cannot be rented
